What Is the China Manufacturing PMI?

The China Manufacturing PMI measures changes in manufacturing activity based on factors including production, new orders, employment, inventories and supplier delivery times.

It provides sourcing and procurement teams with a useful indication of whether manufacturing conditions in China are expanding or slowing.

How to Read the PMI

Above 50 — Expansion
Manufacturing activity is generally increasing.

50 — Neutral Threshold
Activity is broadly unchanged.

Below 50 — Contraction
Manufacturing activity is generally declining.

Why China PMI Matters for Importers

Changes in manufacturing activity can provide useful context for buyers sourcing products from China.

Periods of stronger or weaker activity may influence:

  • Supplier capacity and production schedules
  • Raw material demand
  • Lead times
  • New order activity
  • Factory workloads
  • Supply-chain planning

PMI should not be used to evaluate an individual supplier, but it can help buyers understand the broader manufacturing environment in which their suppliers operate.
