How to Use the AQL Calculator
Using the AQL calculator is straightforward, but the inspection parameters selected can significantly affect the inspection result and risk level.
1. Enter the Lot Size
The lot size refers to the total number of units available for inspection.
Examples:
- 500 garments
- 12,000 electronic accessories
- 3,200 industrial parts
- 850 cosmetic units
The sample size increases progressively depending on the total production quantity.
2. Select the Inspection Level
Inspection levels determine how intensive the inspection will be.
General Inspection Level II is the most commonly used level for standard commercial inspections.
Other levels may be used depending on product risk, supplier performance, or inspection objectives.
3. Select the AQL Limits
The AQL defines the maximum number of defects considered acceptable during the inspection sample.
Typical settings include:
- Critical defects: 0
- Major defects: 2.5
- Minor defects: 4.0
The lower the AQL, the stricter the inspection acceptance criteria become.
4. Review the Result

What the AQL Result Means
An AQL result is not a certification of the entire production lot. It is a statistical sampling method designed to estimate production quality based on a defined inspection sample.
For example:
- Lot size: 5,000 units
- Sample size: 200 units
- Major defects AQL: 2.5
- Accept limit: 10
- Reject limit: 11
This means:
- If 10 or fewer major defects are found, the lot passes.
- If 11 or more major defects are found, the lot fails.
The inspection result reflects the quality condition of the inspected sample at the time of inspection. It does not guarantee future consistency, hidden defects, or full compliance outside the inspected scope.

Inspection Levels Explained
Inspection levels determine the relationship between lot size and sample size.
